We MUST Stop AI! Here's Why and How.

Let’s face it, AI does more harm than good. This is a manifesto for the wholesale rejection of all so-called “Artificial Intelligence”.

What am I referring to by “AI”?

I am referring to an umbrella of various technologies which all brand themselves as “Artificial Intelligence” (there are a lot of problems with the term itself, but for clarity, I will be using it). This encompasses image generation, video generation, text generation as well as other types of software which take inputs and use “machine learning”.

The Pollution of the Net.

Search Engines have become unusable, with so many ‘blogs’ being made up entirely of AI slop articles. Same goes for social media, being filled with AI slop text, images and videos. Even some news publications such as The New York Times state in their principles that “Generative A.I. can assist our journalists in uncovering the truth and helping more people understand the world.” which is utterly ludicrous given that these tools have no way to discern truth and have been used in disinformation campaigns such as by the Russian government and by the Donald Trump presidential campaign. AI is a pollutant on the net and will make getting things done and finding information harder and harder, as it already has done.

The Pollution of the Planet.

Even more importantly, AI data centers are killing our planet, with high electricity and water consumption, depriving people and animals of water, which from what I’ve heard is necessary to live. However, it’s important to acknowledge that this will not solve climate change on its own. However, freeing up more energy and water for genuinely helpful use-cases is beneficial, as it means less power plants need to be built and made active, thus decreasing carbon emissions.

The Only Winning Move is Not to Play.

But most importantly, what do we do about this? Well, the solutions on an individual level are thankfully quite simple. Here’s a list:

Stop using any products which market themselves as AI. This should ideally be the first step. This also includes content which uses AI tools in its creation. We need to make some noise and actively shame the practice of using AI because it is harmful not to do so.
If you are a creator, create something yourself!
If not, pay someone who is! Many artists have open commissions and would be happy to make the piece you need for your project or personal enjoyment.
If you can’t afford that, pick up a pencil learn to create things! Ultimately, the world is a better place with more creators instead of mere consumers.
Demand rejection of AI in group projects you are involved in! For example, I advocated against allowing AI-generated articles when I worked at The Student Insurgent. While this was ultimately a failure, I was able to stand up for what I believed in, and in future endeavors I will do the same.

I am not advocating for any government policy changes! As an anarchist, it would be against my values to demand an assertion of my desires, even ones which I feel strongly about like the destruction of all AI. Instead, we need to take actions such as the above, which directly affect AI’s impact on our lives.

With these steps, as well as other ideas from the many people of the world (NOT AI!) we can defeat the AI menace and bring about a world where creative work is creative, and created by living beings with emotional intent.

Leaving the United States: Apostille

I finally got my birth certificate apostilled! Let’s talk about how I did that and how you can do the same in preparation for your move.

What is an apostille and how did I get one?

An apostille is quite similar to a notarization, but for international use. In-general, an immigration office in a member country of the Apostille Convention of 5 October 1961 will expect you to provide not just a birth certificate, but one which has been apostilled. As covered in a previous article, I had already changed my name and gender marker on my birth certificate. This is important to do beforehand because otherwise, you will end up providing your deadname to your new country of residence, thus getting your new ID card in it as well. Why do that if you don’t have to? I opted to go in-person since I was visiting family anyways, and could take a short train ride to the Chicago Secretary of State key office to get that done, since it is much faster due to not having to wait for mail.

How can you get one?

So, this is where it varies by state. In-general, you will want to find information on how to get an apostille from your state government’s Secretary of State website. In the case of Illinois where I’m from, you can find that information here (If you get an “Access denied” message, you will unfortunately have to turn off your VPN).

I finally have my passport! Here’s how to get yours.

Getting your Passport as a Trans Person

As of the time of writing, you simply need to go through the normal process, with one exception. You will need to also sign an attestation declaring essentially that you are covered by Orr v. Trump’s preliminary injunction. Then, you will want to apply in-person. It took me about 3 weeks to get my passport since I paid more for expedited service.

Leaving the United States: Birth Certificate and Social Security

It’s official. I have everything ready, except my passport. As-such, I can write an article about these things, and what the process was like.

Updating Birth Certificate (Illinois)

This was a relatively straightforward process, albeit most likely the longest one. The process also varies significantly by state. I was born in Illinois, so this section will focus on the process for those also born in Illinois.

You will need the following (Information gathered through Illinois Department of Public Health):

To fill out a notarized Affidavit and Certificate of Correction Request. Even if you are not located in Illinois, it should still be possible do get it signed and notarized with a local notary public.
A Certified Copy of Court Order of Legal Name Change, assuming that you are updating your legal name, and not just your sex designation on your birth certificate
A photocopy of both sides of your Driver’s License or other Photo ID
$15 in either cash or a cheque, with $2 each for any additional copies

Once you have these, you will need to mail them to the address listed on the Affidavit (item 1 on the above list). You can do this from your local post office. Then, you should expect at most a 6 week wait, which is roughly how long it took for me.

As I stated before, if you were born in a state other than Illinois, you may have to go through a different process, and changing your sex designation may not be an option. For more information, I recommend checking the Advocates for Trans Equality’s documents center, which provides detailed information for each state.

Unlike with the previous section, this part, being for a federal agency, does not vary depending on state, so this should apply to anyone in the US with a Social Security number.

As of the time of writing, it is not currently possible to update your sex designation with the Social Security Administration. However, it is possible to update your name, and you should, since it’s a prerequisite for updating your name for a lot of other things, such as your bank and State ID or Driver’s License. Here’s how to do it.

Firstly, you will want to fill out the form here, and begin your application online. After answering the few questions, you’ll want to click the Start application button.

Then, you will want to save a copy of the webpage after you finish. I recommend printing as a PDF.

Afterwards, you will want to gather the documents listed on that page, and head to your local Social Security office. Afterwards, you will have to wait an estimated 2 weeks to receive your new Social Security card. In my case, I was able to get a new Social Security Card in 6 days, which was a pleasant surprise. Then you can move on in the list, updating your state ID and Passport.

Leaving the United States: The First Steps

Introduction

With the ongoing attacks on trans rights in the United States, and especially on trans women such as myself, I have elected to move to the Netherlands. It will be an arduous process which I will document in this series, so that others who wish to emigrate from the United States may do the same with some guidance.

This post will list the steps I needed/need to take as of time of writing, March 28th, 2025 in order to move to the Netherlands, using the DAFT as a means to acquire residency.

What I’m worried about

I am worried about quite a few of these, as indicated with a ⚠️. Let’s go over each of these and why I am worried about them.

I grouped these two together since these are both affected by the executive order which president Donald Trump enacted shortly after seizing state power. Since as of the time of writing, it is not possible to get my gender marker with either the Social Security Administration or the Passport office to be correct for me, I will have to make-do. If the situation changes, I will post an update in a new post as-soon as possible and link it here.

Finding a place to live

It is no secret that in Amsterdam, much like other cities across the world, there is an ongoing housing crisis. As-such, it may be difficult to find an apartment or house to rent, albeit not impossible. This is most likely the actual hardest part with moving, as would be expected with moving pretty much anywhere.

Will I Come Back?

No. Not under any circumstances. I consider the entire United States to be extremely dangerous to go to, whether for travel or for moving back, so unless something drastic changes, I don’t see myself ever moving back or even visiting.

Conclusion

Well, it looks like there’s still a lot to do, but at the very least, I have a plan all figured out, which is a good first step. My Thoughts on World of Goo

World of Goo is an indie game developed by 2D Boy and published by Tomorrow Corporation. I first played this game back in 2008 on my Nintendo Wii, which I still have so I ended up playing it again on it. It was great to play games there again, as I had done all those years ago. It’s a fantastic puzzle game built around physics, and I’m excited to share my thoughts.

One thing I noticed right away was the aesthetic which is quite distinct and very morbid while also being cute and cartoony. It reminds me a bit of flash games I’d play back in the day, which makes sense since it released around that time. Everything in this game is dark, but still made me laugh, as the game has a dark sense of humor that I didn’t get when I played it as a kid. It’s truly something unique which you’ll have to see for yourself.

Another thing I noticed about this game was that the controls on the Wii version were superb! Pointing, clicking and dragging felt very natural, as this game was designed with the Wii in-mind.

The gameplay involves the player building structures with the goo balls to lead them to a pipe at the end of the level, and over time the puzzles become more and more complex. As you do this, a fascinating story unfolds, which I won’t spoil here but it turns in some interesting directions.

To conclude, World of Goo is an amazing game which I’m glad I revisited. Everything from the gameplay to the aesthetics reminds me of a simpler time when I played random WiiWare games all those years ago, and coming back to World of Goo allowed me to experience that joy once again.

Verdict: Recommended!

My Thoughts on GNOG

Today, I played GNOG, a rather trippy puzzle game centered around playing with strange puzzle boxes. Its aesthetics evoke a sense of wonder although admittedly the gameplay felt a bit simplistic. Still, it was certainly a game I wouldn’t have picked up otherwise and part of the fun of this is to try new games. It was certainly jarring to be pushed into the action without really knowing what was going on, but it made it that much more of a magical experience.

Verdict: Recommended!

My First Game Development Experience

So, I tried making a text adventure game in C, and it was a dumpster fire. Let’s talk about that.

What is a text adventure game?

A text adventure game, or interactive fiction as it’s sometimes known, is a type of game where the player inputs commands, similar to a terminal to progress through the game’s story. Here’s an example of what that looks like:

You find yourself in an open field.
You see:
A lamp
A burly guard
A cave entrance to the east
--> get lamp
You get the lamp.
-->

Why would I make a text adventure game?

My background is primarily in programming and writing, not art. Thus, a game that minimizes art and emphasizes programming and writing made the most sense, and that’s exactly what a text adventure game does.

Why would I write it in C?

C is a great programming language for portability (for example, I could port the game to the Commodore 64 pretty easily using cc65), and I could do basically everything I needed to using just the C standard library, since this game is all about printing text and accepting user text inputs.

The problems

I bit off way more than I could chew with this game, as a text adventure game like this has a lot of possible things that could happen and needs to have lots of content in order to be even slightly fun. Not a good idea for a first game.

In addition, the codebase wasn’t really designed with modifying the game data mid-development in mind, as doing so would require me to rewrite a ton of game logic that relied on specific game data being available to read.

I learned some valuable lessons in making this game, and will try making a game with a smaller scope in the future.

Setting up riseup.net as an email provider for Mastodon

Heyo! It’s been a while, but I managed to do something quite neat if you’re on a budget and want to start a Mastodon instance. As a de-facto requirement for a Mastodon instance, you’ll need to have an email server hooked up. This can get pricey, so an alternative is an ideal way to save money long-term. This is where riseup comes in. They provide an email service for activists for free (as long as you have an invite) Unfortunately, you cannot use a custom domain with riseup yet, so when emails are sent to users of your Mastodon server, it’ll be an @riseup.net address. This article details the steps you’ll need to take to configure riseup for your very own Mastodon server.

Getting a Riseup email

You’ll need an invite to join riseup, so I suggest asking your radical friends for an invite (please don’t bug me for an invite code, I will not give one to you unless I know you). Once you have that, you can create a new account with the username being related to the name of your new Mastodon instance (e.g. emeraldsocial is the riseup username for my own instance). Congrats! You’ve got a riseup email now! The address will be [username]@riseup.net.

Connecting your email to Mastodon

The next step is to actually connect SMTP endpoints to Mastodon’s .env.production, located in the root folder of your live installation. Really, any text editor will work, but I decided to use vim because I’m used to it (editor wars intensifies). In the Sending mail section of .env.production, add the following lines:

SMTP_PASSWORD=[averysecurepassword]

Then you can save and exit that file (on vim, this is :wq) and finally test it out by logging into a new session on your Mastodon account from an unknown IP address, resetting your password, or any other action which triggers an email notification. Now you’ve got a functional email setup for your Mastodon server at no cost to you! I hope you enjoyed this article and will share it across the world.

Z-Library Lives On! Accessing Z-Lib With Tor

You may have heard about one of the coolest sites on the web, Z-Library being seized, but fret not ebook lovers! There’s still a way to access this popular ebook repository with Tor. This article will explain in-detail the steps needed to access the site and keep on reading.

Getting Started With Tor Browser

Explaining all the use-cases and technology behind Tor is a story for another article, but for our purposes, it allows for us to continue accessing Z-library through its official onion service.

To do this, you will have to start by installing Tor Browser to your computer. Once this is done, launch it, and you will see something like this:

After clicking Connect, and waiting (Tor is kinda slow, even on faster internet connections so be patient!), you will then be able to use the darknet (congrats!)

Getting onto the Onion Service

Now that you are done with that, you can then use the onion service descriptor to access the site. An onion service descriptor is similar to a website domain, although instead of .com, .net, .org or similar, it has a .onion top-level domain at the end. These .onion addresses cannot be connected to at all from a normal web browser like Firefox, which is why earlier you had to download and install Tor Browser. At this point, you just need to paste the following address into the address bar in Tor Browser:

After waiting some more (again, Tor is kinda slow so be patient!)… You will be greeted with a login screen. If you have existing credentials, you can sign in, or otherwise sign up for an account. (If you sign up for a new account, make sure to check your e-mail for a verification link and select Load Normally when the NoScript dialog appears.)

You’re in!

Then, after clicking Continue and being redirected… Voilà! You now can browse and download books on Z-Library freely!

Emerald Social: A Local Mastodon Server

Introduction

With social media, I’ve found that people will often gravitate towards whatever is put in-front of them. As such, it is a great power, and thus great responsibility to have control of that. Unfortunately, as it stands, platforms like (but not limited to) Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok fail to handle this responsibility well. It’s well-known that corporate social media abuses its power to destroy people’s mental health and influence elections. Not only that, but they intentionally foster communities of toxicity for profit.

Go Local?

If national news sucks, why not go local? Much the same might be said for social media. However, in local communities, there aren’t any good options in practice.

Neighbors

As part of Amazon’s mass police surveillance company, Neighbors is primarily used for “public safety”, otherwise known as violating privacy and racial profiling.

Citizen

Similar to Neighbors, Citizen is primarily designed for “public safety” and snitching. Almost everything about Neighbors also applies here.

Local Facebook Residents Group

It’s Facebook. All the problems mentioned in the introduction are there. In addition, it’s impossible to view posts without logging in half the time, and that’s unacceptable for the free and open web.

Nextdoor

Nextdoor presents itself as a friendly local-focused social media network, but in actuality ends up being a NIMBY hell-hole with similar toxicity to Facebook residents’ groups and all the other options mentioned previously.

Enter Mastodon

Mastodon is a decentralized, open source, and interoperable social media network. That means people can talk to each-other across various Mastodon servers, and servers running other software that runs ActivityPub, the glue that holds it all together. Since there’s no corporate control and the source code is free (as in both freedom and price) for anyone, I knew this would be a good choice, especially since there are instances specific to individual places out there, such as oslo.town, toot.wales, social.tulsa.ok.us, and pdx.social to name four.

To add one more to that list, I introduce Emerald Social, a social network for the Eugene-Springfield, Oregon area!

In essence, it serves the same purpose as the aforementioned instances but for Eugene. Instead of being a proprietary NIMBY haven, Emerald Social seeks to be a welcoming and friendly space for locals to discuss local issues, while still being able to follow accounts on other instances.

Introduction

RSS or Really Simple Syndication is an excellent way to get a feed from a massive amount of sources! Instead of having to go to different websites for updates on different things, one can simply read from all sorts of sources in one single feed. In this article, you will learn how to find feeds for various social media, news, and video sites.

Twitter

Nitter is a free software frontend for Twitter, and includes the ability to follow an account as an RSS feed. The format is as follows:

Instagram

Bibliogram is similarly a free software frontend for Instagram that includes following accounts as RSS feeds, although not all instances support this, so you will want to check the list of instances first.

YouTube

YouTube has built-in RSS functionality. The format is as follows:

TikTok

Proxitok is a free software frontend for Tiktok that includes following accounts as RSS feeds. The format is as follows:
